After finishing Half the Sky and hearing about various tales and triumphs of women, all ages included, and what is going on in some parts of the world, I think it's safe to say that I am very fortunate and that some change needs to happen...and fast. Basically, what Kristoff and WuDunn repeatedly state throughout this book is that these problems, thousands of miles away, involving different cultures that seem foreign to us, and are so far away from our problems that our mental capacity has a hard time understanding NEED to be obligations for American citizens.
Kristoff and WuDunn quote, "we single out the West, because even though they are peripheral to slavery and the horrors occurring, our action is necessary to overcome this necessary evil" (143). I think Kristoff and WuDunn are 100 percent right in fact. Our country possess the resources, capacities, and funds to enact change. Whether it be by education the rest of the world, providing aid, or making it a part of our political agenda - something NEEDS to be done.
Personally, I think the most important part is educating everyone about what is going on and also educating the women in these predicaments in Pakistan, Cambodia, etc. that they have other options and this is not the way things should be (if we could get past cultural and religious beliefs and histories). However, education is definitely the most important thing surround a solution to this issue.
The second largest issues becomes the law, and laws don't mean much if they are not followed. This relates to all women traffickers and prostitutes, but mostly Kristoff and WuDunn recognize this when they explore female genital mutilation in Africa.
However, one solution they provide is that if everyone could look past the failures and differences of multiculturalism and work together, educate together, and understand then some real progress could be made, and I agree. It's hard to imagine any real tangible change happening -simply because who will be a "doer" and who will start? BUT I do believe it's possible.
Thanks Professor for assigning this book to read, and opening my eyes to some issues going on in the world that I had no idea about. I really learned a lot from your class! Thank you!

Books2Share
Mission: To provide individuals with an interactive community to share books, in every language, from every part of the world, and for free. Books provide individuals, groups, and the world at large with knowledge, insight, and prospective. If there was a community in every part of the world, compromised of an eclectic mix of races, ethnicities, cultures, etc. that shared books that were important to them, you not only would learn about all types of peoples, cultures, and history, but also would gain more understanding about what is going on in different corners of the world. Stories, experiences, and histories that are so vital to one group of people could be translated and transplanted into another culture and transform the way they think about themselves and about others. It would create an environment of understanding and empathy to know what is important around the world and why it is important. Books2Share would connect individuals with the capacities to send their favorite books around the world in the hopes that someone else would read them and it would transform their entire perspective - think a global book club or Amazon without paying for books, simply sharing.
Books2Share most importantly - educates. It gives individuals a change to understand and learn from other people while sharing a part of themselves through their books. Reading and learning should be continuous in someone's life and Books2Share could provide a platform that could make that a reality for someone who lacks the resources for literary retailers.
Books2Share is a unique organization because it takes something as simple as books, which are going out of style, and finds a way to connect individuals without using technology. Reading books is a lost art these days thanks to numerous devices that allow you to read "plugged in". To recreate the joy and simplicity of books and sharing books by word of mouth - or in this case through written word of mouth - is much more powerful and meaningful then online recommendations from strangers and computer calculated suggestions. Books2Share creates an organic environment for individuals to share, meet, and connect while learning and educating themselves.
Anima Mundi Development Partners should support Books2Share because of the message it is creating. Reading, learning, and knowledge are important. And more than that, connecting and understanding with different peoples from all walks of life creates an empathic and peaceful environment. If we could connect individuals and conflicting groups through something everyone has - books - and something everyone does - read - we could solve real problems.
For example: Books2Share has connected two individuals, one young adult living in Beverly Hills in California and another young adult living in Nepal. The young adult in Beverly Hills sends his favorite book, The Alchemist, while the young adult in Nepal sends a book about the harmful world of sex slaves and child prostitution occurring in his country. The young adult in Beverly Hills reads about the horrific crimes going on in Nepal and decides he has the resources and the capacities to bring attention to this matter, and he could personally do something to help. Consequently, the you'd adult in Nepal reads the Alchemist and is inspired by the overarching theme in the book, that when you want something, all the world conspires in helping you achieve it. The young adult in Nepal is suddenly inspired to change his life, get an education, and help others. This may be far fetched, but you never know the power of words and of lessons you learn from others and from reading books about others stories, experience, and learned knowledge that becomes shared knowledge.

MEMO
MEMO
To:
Clark Hansen, Chief Executive Officer and Spiritual Innovator of Anima Mundi
Development Partners (AMDP)
From:
Jenna Brosi, Director of Sustainability Research and Development
Date: 24 July 2015
Re:
The Honest Company
As
Director of Sustainability Research and Development, my job is to propose ways
to expand, improve, and reinvent AMDP’s existing and future ventures that align
within our economic, social, and environmental parameters: Triple Bottom Line,
Corporate Social Responsibility, Social Enterprise and Carbon Footprint. The
Honest Company does just that.
The
Honest Company, a trendy health, beauty, wellness, and more corporation, embodies
standards that are transforming the way the world thinks about all products while
maintaining a conscious awareness of the environment, accounting for their
societal impact, and skyrocketing business sales – allowing them to play ball
with other reputable corporate juggernauts.
As
a reference tool, the following definitions help explain the values our company
embodies and thus, what we take into account when considering a potential candidate,
such as The Honest Company, to invest in:
Triple Bottoms Line
Embodying
the 3 P’s profit, people, and planet to measure the financial, social and
environmental performance, and responsibility of a company’s operations (Triple
Bottom Line).
- · The social bottom line measures long term sustainability of business human capital with the understanding that a business that is a desirable workplace, with loyal customers, and that invests in their societal surrounding will always continue to operate (Sustainability Management System: The Triple Bottom Line).
- · Furthermore, the less stress your company puts on the environment and the fewer natural resources you deplete, the longer and more successful your business will be. To measure your environmental bottom line, you need to manage, monitor, and report your consumption, waste, and emissions – with a company-wide emphasis and value on waste reduction and green policies (Sustainability Management System: The Triple Bottom Line).
- · Lastly, the economic bottom line measures your company’s capital in terms of how much your business operations effect your surrounding economy. A business that strengthens the economy they participate in and belong to will succeed in the future (Triple Bottom Line).
Factoring
in your environmental, social, and economic impacts delivers greater
efficiency, makes your company more competitive, and sparks innovation - all
drivers of profitability over time. Also, intuitively and morally it makes
sense to leave the planet a little better than you found it, to work for a
company that operates ethically and acts with integrity, and cares about the
people it employs and serves (Why the Triple Bottom Line Matters More Than Ever).
Corporate Social
Responsibility
Refers
to a the continuing commitment by a business to contribute to their economic
prosperity while simultaneously improving the quality of life of the workforce,
the community, and the environment at large. Measuring corporate
responsibility is done by proactive steps including but not limited to:
conscious environmental practice – improve sustainability, philanthropy –
donating to money or time to local and national charities, and ethical labor
practices – treating employees fairly and ethically (Fallon).
Social Enterprise
Social
enterprises are revenue-generating businesses that have two goals: to improve
social, cultural, economic, and environmental harmony and to earn revenue. At
first look, a social enterprise may operate like a traditional money-driven
machine, however social, cultural, and environmental mission are at the center
of this business model, while profit and revenue land a supporting role (WHAT IS
SOCIAL ENTERPRISE?).
Carbon Footprint
Carbon
footprint is defined as the total amount of greenhouse gases produced directly
and indirectly to support human activities and the impact we are having on
Earth. Carbon footprint is typically measured in tons of greenhouse gas
emission – carbon dioxide being the lead emitter. It is essential to reduce our
carbon footprint because greenhouse gas emissions have been the main culprit in
rising temperatures contributing to global warming. Rising temperatures shifting
environmental patterns are affecting habitat, wildlife, vegetation, etc. and
can result in irreversible damages to our environment (Morse).
A Warm Welcome for… The
Honest Company
Co-founders,
a mom named Jessica and a dad named Christopher, wanted to eliminate their
frustration, and others, by bringing parents a product that was not only
effective but unquestionably safe,
eco-friendly, beautiful, convenient, and affordable – because every baby
deserves the best they can create for them (The Honest Company). Jessica and
Christopher strive to embody all of the qualities in a brand they hold dear –
savvy style, sustainability, and extraordinary service and convenience all
wrapped in a passion for social goodness, tied with a bow of integrity, and
sprinkled with a little cheeky fun according to the two entrepreneurs, not to
mention self-dubbed “dreamers” (The Honest Company).
What’s All the Buzz
About?
Like
most good companies, the Honest Company started to fill the emptiness of a
niche market that was not being met. After Jessica Alba suffered illnesses from
harsh toxic chemicals in regards to beauty, health, and wellness products, she
knew she did not want her children to experience the same. Alas, the Honest
Company found its voice in 2011 and its first potential consumer market –
babies - to ensure parents have access to non-toxic, eco-friendly, beautiful
family products that don’t break the bank and that sure as heck don’t contain
toxic ingredients (B Corporation). This young company has made a huge splash in
the corporate capital pool in a relatively short amount of time.
According
to Forbes, “The Honest Company has experienced an absurd level of growth. In
2012, its first year selling products, it hit $10 million in revenue. By last
year it was $150 million, and industry insiders are predicting over $250
million this year. The company is focused on growth over profits, boasting a
current valuation to match: $1 billion” (O’Connor).
While
the company first started with a focus on diapers, and all things baby, they
have now expanded to cover all things health, beauty, and wellness for a wide
spectrum of ages and proclaim they are the jack of all trades by recognizing
themselves overall as: a lifestyle brand.
The Honest Company’s
Values – Similar to AMDP’s
The
Honest Company was created in order for Jessica and Christopher to follow their
hearts and consciences, with each detail and every decision – that would result
in positive impacts (The Honest Company). Here are the standards and values
that they hold with the upmost importance:
- · Creating a Culture of Honesty – a standard that the Honest Company encourages throughout their staff, stakeholders, and customers.
- · Outperform – crafting products that will perform to the highest standards of effectiveness. The Honest Company focuses on minimizing harmful toxins in their products and packaging. Therefore, they source natural, organic, sustainably harvested, renewable, pure raw materials for products, track all the materials, ingredients, and packaging used in their products to help them report and understand trends to reduce toxins and environmental harm, specify and closely monitor the quality-control standards and protocols in their manufacturing to ensure highest quality, cleanliness, and overall product and ingredient integrity (The Honest Company).
- · Service Matters – The Honest Company knows how important service is, so they go above and beyond and know that creating an open dialogue with customers provides them with the opportunity to learn the most and only improve. They also ensure the way their product is manufactured, their employee work environments, waste management, energy usage, and much more is held to the highest standards of natural and renewable energy and quality (The Honest Company).
- · Sustain Life – knowing they can make an amazing product without harming people or the planet and feeling a tremendous responsibility to protecting the environment and the place we call home. Their vision of health and sustainability is to reduce the ubiquitous presence of toxic chemicals in our natural environment protect natural resources by minimizing waste and maximizing use/reuse, support peace, security, and social justice, and promote diversity and productivity through all facets of life (The Honest Company).
- · Pay it Forward – committing themselves to both individual and corporate social responsibility by taking selfless actions that benefit others. Including charitable partnerships, working with advocates on promoting policy changes that better product our children and planet, and supporting the efforts of our employees with paid community service days and direct matches of non-profit donations (The Honest Company). Their charitable work focuses on two specific areas: whole child development of children ages 0-3 and education and skill-training for youth to pursue their dreams (B Corporation). However, The Honest Company extends their corporate reach to include funding nutrition and healthy food and non-toxic cleaning products for schools and childcare centers.
Now Down to Business.
Does The Honest Company Have What it Takes? (opinions)
According
to Forbes, The Honest Company, supported by Jessica and Co., is outperforming
for their age and size. The Honest Company has unlimited access to capital and
a very strong balance sheet that is allowing them to expand globally by 2016
(O’Connor). Not only is The Honest Company known for its monthly on-line
subscription to goods and services delivered right to your front door, but they
are now in upscale “mommy” boutiques as well brick-and –mortar stores such as:
Target, Whole Foods, etc. In short – The Honest Company is booming. While The
Honest Company started out with the best intentions and integrity, throughout
the years they have managed to maintain their honest values and have converted
into a single brand that carries its own weight in credibility across all
products in the nontoxic universe (O’Connor).
Another
source, Biz Women: The Business Journals, points out the value of The Honest
Company for their ability to market not only to parents of children, but to all
spectrum of ages – feisty millennials included. The way they do this is to
focus on their dedication to a cause or a mission to change the world for the
better. The Honest Company vows to do just that, which hits just right with
millennials who make a purchase or recommend a product based on a company’s
efforts toward social good or to support a cause (Burns). The Honest Company
actually follows through with that commitment allocating $3 million plus in
resources to help young children and families – as they described in their
business model explained above.
While
there has been hearsay about the validity of “non-toxicity promise” in The
Honest Company, no reputable source has reported such a thing, allowing The Honest
Company to maintain their eco-friendly, wholly sustainable, and socially
responsible legitimacy that they founded and built their company on and
continue to prosper and grow from. Investing in The Honest Company would be
beneficial for AMDP not only because it’s a company that shares the same values
and standards as ours, but because it is a company that is constantly revolutionizing
the way people think about eco-friendly and natural products of all health,
wellness, and beauty spheres and it will continue to impact millions of people
with their global outreach and platform in projected in 2016.

Half the Sky (Post #2)
This post is a little late....(sorry Professor!) However, the further I get into this book, the more it actually depresses me. As we all know, sex trafficking - or sex slaves - is a huge concern for some countries and this plays a role in the overall theme: the oppression of women. According to some accounts retold in Half the Sky, women are either born or forced into the trade of prostitution or selling their bodies and have little to no choice about this. They are then intimidated, beaten, and coerced into staying in the brothels and continuing such a life. While this seems very concerning to Western cultures and individuals trying to find resources and ways to help rescue these innocent women, there are some women who share and participate in the same values that dominate these cultures and continue to oppress women and continue to keep them indebted as sex slaves.
How can you continue to feel sorry and angry about situations like these when the women willingly subject themselves to this kind of behavior and cultural practices? According to one account retold in this book, "women themselves absorb and transmit misogynistic values, just as men do. This is not a tidy world of tyrannical men and victimized women, but a messier realm of oppressive social customs adhered to by men and women alike" (69). Furthermore, laws can be of some assistance, but the greatest obstacle to halting sex trafficking and it practices and helping women is to change the ways of thinking for these peoples. The author even goes as far to suggest that, "the very best means of combating suffocating traditions is education" (69) which I completely agree with.
Education seems to be the most important thing to women willingly participating and subjecting themselves to these practices and behaviors simply because they do not know better. However, how can you educate so many women and in so many different places? Even if schools and systems for education were implemented, how then would you rescue or save the women currently living in brothels? How would you then convince them to attend school and work towards an education that provides hope and a prosperous future when tradition and their societal customs and beliefs have always stated otherwise?
These questions are all very important and some that I have been thinking of throughout this book. I guess I'll just have to continue reading in the hopes these questions I have are better explained and hopefully answered.

Currently Reading...
Other than all the books assigned by Professor Hansen that I have been diligently reading (obviously), I like to leisurely read other books as well, when I have spare time. I'm a huge book worm and tend to favor non-fiction books - usually memoirs. Currently, I'm reading a book titled Without You, There is No Us: My Time with The Sons of North Korea's Elite by Suki Kim.
Here's a picture of the book just for reference. I'm about 3/4 of the way through the book and it is slightly disturbing. Suki Kim is a Korean American NY Times journalist who, because of her heritage, decides to teach at a North Korean university, Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, that is located in Pyongyang. Her book recounts her time in North Korea and her experience teaching English, which is everything you've heard to be true and more. I won't say too much...but if you're interested in reading this book the New York Times has a great review http://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/14/books/review/suki-kims-without-you-there-is-no-us.html?_r=0.
For me, reading memoirs and non-fiction books allows me to learn about so many subjects, people, countries, and things I just would not have known about in an interesting first-hand context. I will give you a few recommendations of some great books I've read, and hopefully you can carve out some time to read!

Half the Sky (Part 1)
Even though I haven't gotten far into this book, yet - because I will definitely read the entire thing- I have already read some disturbing statements and facts just in the first few pages. Sex trafficking is a vicious cycle as described in Half the Sky by Nicolas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. If you don't willingly go into the business, and I say this rather lightly because according to the authors in some third world countries sex is the only thing available commercially, you are born into it. And those who are enslaved into it often just accept their fate and begin to willingly participate because they know of no other alternative or they are too stigmatized by society to choose another route (5).
However, the statement that really confuses me and is borderline outrageous is that in countries that are more religious and sexually conservative - Iran, Pakistan, and India - there are disproportionately large number of forced prostitution than anywhere else in the world (6). According to authors, the logic here is, "upper class girls will keep their virtue, while young men will find satisfaction in the brothels" (6). As long as the girls and women in the brothels are uneducated and from peasant families, society will turn a blind eye to this illegal and disgusting practice of sex trafficking.
Not only are girls and women being sexually abused and exploited in the brothels, they are also physically beaten. There is no justice system when it comes to brothels and no one to protect the girls and women, since police were regular visitors of the brothels themselves and were often offered free services.
Growing up across the world, you don't realize prostitution, in some countries, is forced and is not used opportunistically and freely by choice if the circumstances call for such a thing. In these countries, described above, women are forced into prostitution and made to have sex with men for no profit - this, as the authors grimly state, is an example of slavery. They even estimate that there are 3 million women worldwide that are enslaved in the sex trade, and even that is a conservative number (10). Reading these facts is terrifying, being a woman myself, to think about and try and empathize with.
As I continue reading I look forward to hearing more stories of different women and girls and what they have done to change their perceived fate or what others have done to help them. There must be a general solution to this disaster, and action must be taken immediately to stop this. Hopefully, this book will point out some common actions or solutions that may be taken to help.

and your appearance, just as much as us ladies do. And a little advice to you
men - women appreciate a man who takes care of himself and looks good. This
includes your skin. These 5 simple and on-the-go tricks and tips can be used
for ANY working professional, ladies and gents, and won't break your precious
time bank!
CLEANSE
No matter who you are, no matter how great or poorly your skin already looks, every dermatologist, facialist, esthetician will tell you to wash your face - morning and night. Keeping your skin clean is one of the most important steps to achieving great looking skin. Cleansing and washing your face really is such a simple task to do, no more than 2-3 minutes, and no work or kid related excuse should exempt you from skipping this simple task. After a long day at the office and running errands, oil and dirt inevitably end up on your face and in your pores. Simple as splashing some warm water on your faced, massaging in some gentle cleanser, and patting your face dry would make all the difference in the way your skin looks and feels.
A great cleanser that is effective at unclogging pores and erasing dirt and impurities from your face, while not forcing you to fork over a whole weeks paycheck is: Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser
And guys, washing your face is not girly. You can join in on the fun too with a cleanser designed specifically for your rough and tough, rugged, scruffy man skin: Dove For Men Hydrating Face Wash
SUNSCREEN
Okay, okay I get it - you're sick of everyone jumping on the sunscreen bandwagon and preaching about the damage sun does to your skin. I understand. But really, wearing sunscreen is the single easiest, and most effective wear to protect your skin and to ensure your skin will continue to look young in the future boasts Texas based dermatologist Lisa Garner, MD, president of the Women’s Dermatologic Society. However, at this point, it’s practically common knowledge that sun damage and skimping on sunscreen is the number one cause of lines, wrinkles, dark spots, and of course skin cancer. Now really, it takes approximately 30 seconds to lather up your face with some sunscreen. Everyone has time for that, and skin cancer? - no way anyone wants to go through that. And I know you certainly don't have time for those endless doctor's appointments and possible surgeries if you do end up with skin cancer from not wearing sunscreen and protecting your skin. It's so much easier to wear sunscreen everyday and prevent any of the above inevitable symptoms, than it is to reverse these effects. WATER
Get to chugging people, turns out water makes your skin look great and it can have other health benefits as well - an extra bonus for working individuals who don't always make it to the gym - who doesn't also want to banish belly bloat? Water helps clear out the extra toxins in your skin that cause blemishes. Sipping on water throughout the day keeps your skin extra hydrated which transports nutrients and oxygen to skin cells instructs Dr. Ava Shambam of Beverly Hills. Did I lose you there? Are you thinking why is this all important? Well, once again, dehydration and forgoing the recommended 8 glasses of water each day cause major fine line, wrinkles, and premature aging on skin on your face but also all over the rest of your body. Skin will appear more ample and fuller - like a plumped up baby's bottom. Who doesn't want that? My advice to you, bring a reusable water bottle to work. Not only are you being eco-friendly and reusing your water bottle - look at you being green! - but it makes drinking the recommended serving of water more accessible and easier when you always have your water bottle with you. Chances are, any work environment will have a faucet or drinking fountain you can fill up in. Lastly, if you aren't a big water drinker or get bored with normal water, try infusing your water with some lemon or mint - even tangy fruit does the trick to spice up your water and keep you drinking!

FOOD
People, people, people. I should not have to tell you this, you already know it - you are what you eat. What you put in your gut will not only appear on your face, but it will show all over you body. Yikes! If your insides aren't happy, your skin certainly won't be either. Load up on veggies and omega-3 fatty acids- almonds, avocados, fish - and watch your skin transform! I get it, you work, and early - you don't have time or energy to eat healthy. However, excuses are no more. Meal prepping is all the rage these days and it's one trend that proves to be easy and effective. Give it a try, save some money, prepare your meals at the beginning of the week, and bring your lunch to work. You'll eat better and become more conscious of what you put into your body. Not only will you look better, and feel better, but it will show on your skin. Don't forget your fruit either! Especially berries - which are loaded with antioxidants and vitamins that protect your skin and promote collagen (which prevents wrinkles and dull looking skin).

Any working professional knows that if you are thorough and do something done right, it will save your ass in the long run and you won't have to do it again!

SLEEP
If everyone is still with me you will be pleased to know that I have saved my final piece of advice for last because I believe it is everyone's favorite and most important. Yes, you read that right - SLEEP! Get to snoozing people, it's not called beauty sleep for nothing! Sleep deprivation not only has skin consequences, but it can be detrimental to your health as well. Sleep deprivation lowers circulation, which may cause you to look tired, pale, and washed out - think zombies circa Walking Dead. Sleep is the best time for your body, mind, and skin to get rejuvenated and renew itself. Usually when you sleep, the night shift is when your skin is working it's hardest. I recommend hydrating with some moisturizer right before bed to double the effects of sleeping and really benefit from the sleep you deserve after a long and grueling 8 hour work day.
A moisturizer that hydrates and is specifically used at night: Olay Total Effects Night Firming Cream
Now I know it may be hard to religiously follow and use all the tips and tricks I have described above, but as a working professional I try my best to - and at the very least - incorporate some into my daily and nightly routine. I tried to describe simple and non-time consuming routines that will benefit your skin and your health now and in the long run. But what do I know? I know you're all thinking it. I'm here to assure you, that I'm your bona fide expert skin advisor, without the $40 copay. I have tried everything under the sun and have gotten endless amount of medical advice pertaining to skin from experts. Heck! I've even put bird shit on my face thinking it was going to unclog my pores and even out my skin tone. I'll let you use your imagine on how that went. Basically, keeping it simple really is the way to go. Easy to use, affordable, and simple products can transform your skin as well as the habits you develop using them amongst the other lifestyle tips I have included. Don't let pricey and ingeniously dubbed "miracle transformation serum" products fool you otherwise or let people scam you into lengthy procedures either. You don't want to be passive now, and then later scramble trying to reverse the damages of your skin and your health due to your excuses. Anyone can use these easy to follow tips and tricks while still working, having a family, and trying to balance a social life! Get to it!

Closing Interviews with John Bloom
For the third, and final, part of John Bloom's book The Genius of Money presents various interviews done with selected individuals who have some experience, knowledge, or academic/professional credentials that entitles them to speak freely on their relationship with money, economics, or philanthropy and what it means to them.
One interview I would like to briefly focus on is concerned with philanthropy and it relates to my previous post, regarding this book, on philanthropy. The interview is with an anonymous donor - the significance of this being the anonymity, "eliminates the expectation of recognition from the giving process" (121) in regards to gifting money for charitable purposes. I believe this concept is of the upmost importance, because individuals will generally give money and charitable donations solely for the recognition and infamy it creates for them and their "image". However, this was not the case with this particular interviewee and she had some interesting conclusions and theories that she possessed about philanthropy and her relationship with money.
She states that philanthropy has not been a passion of hers ever - now or in the past. She didn't feel philanthropy was her calling and frankly doesn't like to spend much time on it because it interferes with her personal life and her other interests. Furthermore, she acknowledges that the world is in desperate need of philanthropic assistance and if she is in a position, or anyone is in a position, to help - then by all means we must do so. She claims, "I seem to be in a position to be able to direct significant resources toward helping things that need to happen in order for us to gracefully move to the next stage of our evolution on this earth with as little suffering as possible" (122). She concludes that she has come to become involved in philanthropy out of a sense of responsibility or duty.
This is an interesting concept that she embodies, and I think everyone else should think more like her. If you are in a position and fortunate enough to help those in need and make the world a better place for everyone (in the future) than why would you not? Why would you not give back and create the best environment and future for everyone if you could? Wouldn't you want other individuals to do the same for you if you weren't as fortunate and they were in a position to do so?
Reading through this interview gave me a different perspective and insight into people's relationships with money. A relationship with money can consist of a more spiritual outlook and understanding than purely economic, social, or political. I enjoyed reading about this particular perspective regarding money and I hope more people can develop or adopt this sort of attitude.
*** I used the pronoun "she" because I think I gathered from the interview that "she" was a mother, and referred to other feminine things. However, I'm not entirely sure since the interviewee was anonymous. Keep in mind that the "she" I refer to, may very well be a "he" ***

Fourth of July yay!
I'm not entirely sure if we are supposed to post today, but better safe than sorry. I'll make this one short and sweet!
Fourth of July is hands down my favorite holiday. I love BBQs and that's basically what you do for the ENTIRE weekend of Fourth of July, so best weekend ever! And....BEER. Ha, just kidding. I don't really like beer that much so I opt for some Margaritas - margs for short, on the rox, with salt on the rim of course. I also am really into fireworks. Every year my family and I go to our family beach house in Santa Cruz, California and we buy our on fireworks to participate in the firework chaos down on Seabright Beach. My favorite are Roman Candles.
Anyway, I hope everyone has a very fun, very safe Fourth of July weekend and enjoys this holiday as much as I do! Professor - hopefully you have a new addition to the family you can celebrate his/her's first Fourth with! Enjoy! :)

The Importance and Motives of Philanthropy
While reading through Part II - A Topography of Transactions - of John Bloom's The Genius of Money philanthropy seemed to be a reoccurring and central theme when discussing the economy and economic transactions in a broader sense. Bloom examples that, yes, the "economy" we exist in and take part in would continue to produce, consume, and even profit without the presence of philanthropy and everything would keep running like the well-oiled machine that capitalist America is. However, organizations, activities, or services that depend on gift support and charity - among those some of the most important, such as: education, research, culture, the arts, etc. would fail to see the light of day.
To myself, and Mr. Bloom as well, philanthropic or non-profitable entities prove to be the most essential and valuable aspects of our economic, social, and political well-being. Bloom even goes as far to state that, "gifting is the most important and productive component of an economic system" (72). Well...if this is the case, why don't people gift or give more? Bloom notes that a gift is 100% risk, and even though the returns and benefits you, your community, and in some cases the world receives from that gift are immeasurable, individuals still see it as a risk.
The next chapter dives into the value of community and the personal relationship individuals need to develop when it comes to economic transactions. Even though Bloom uses a finance article from the New York Times as an example, he still notes the importance of a strong, community, and - most importantly - personal relationship when dealing with transactions and business.
All of the above points Bloom discussed are equally as important to me and I truly believe if you want your business or you as an individual to flourish and prosper economically and financially, you need to find a way to socially interact with your community and your business on a deeply personal level and participate in philanthropic activities, whether it be time or money that is donated. The reason I believe this is so essential and believe it works, is because I have witnessed it first hand.
My father, Dr. Robert J. Brosi D.D.S. (lol) owns a successful Dentistry practice in a small town right outside Yosemite National Park - Oakhurst, California. He has been in business for 20+ years and, in my mind - as well as others, is a very well respected Dentist and community member in our small town. One example of the philanthropic actives Bob, as I refer to him, participates in is Free Dentistry Day. He, and his other dentist colleagues, participate in this day and give free dental work to all members of the community. Not only do none of the dentists profit, they use their own resources, supplies, and time to give back their skill and knowledge to those less fortunate. As Bloom argues, what is the price and return of participating in something like this? Surely, in terms of economic value, there is 0% return and 100% risk involved. However, dentists - like good ol' Bob - still choose to participate every year. Rather than a charge against the profits lost through supplies, resources, materials, etc. of Free Dentistry Day, Bob - and other dentists - surely celebrate the way they help individuals and change their health for the better rather than the economical gains they could have received.
Unfortunately, not everyone think in terms like those I have discussed above and Bloom has discussed in detail. If every individual acted more altruistically, then surely more and more individuals would benefit and more would be able to participate and reap all the wonderful aspects and caveats life has to offer.
